Why the Keys Are Different
Most of the continental US gets some UV break — clouds, latitude, seasonal change. The Keys essentially don't. From Key Largo to Key West, UV intensity is sustained year-round at a level that degrades bare gelcoat noticeably faster than a boat stored in Charleston or even Miami. The water is also exceptionally clear and clean, which sounds like a bonus until you realize it means less particulate to buffer hull contact with reef structure and dock pilings.
What We Recommend Leading With in the Keys
For most vessels based in the Keys, we recommend a 3M marine ceramic coating as the foundation — it addresses the UV oxidation issue directly and makes the hull dramatically easier to rinse and maintain between uses. For boats that regularly run shallow water over reef structure or operate near the Intracoastal, we add 3M Marine Protection Film on the bow and waterline, where rock and coral contact is most likely.
Key Largo: Upper Keys and Reef Traffic
Pilot House Marina and Garden Cove Marina see a heavy mix of reef dive operators, flats skiffs, and offshore sportfishing boats. Boats doing multiple daily reef trips accumulate UV exposure fast. Ceramic coating refresh intervals tend to be shorter here than anywhere else we service.
Islamorada: Flats Skiffs and Sportfish
The Sport Fishing Capital of the World is also one of the flattest marine environments we service — most boats here run extremely shallow. MPF on lower hull surfaces makes more sense for flats skiffs operating in Islamorada than almost anywhere else, since hull contact with bottom structure happens regularly even for careful operators.
Marathon and the Middle Keys
Boot Key Harbor has one of the largest liveaboard communities in Florida. Liveaboard vessels sit in salt water 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — the standard recommendation for these boats is a more aggressive ceramic coating schedule than seasonal-use vessels, typically an inspection and refresh every season regardless of visual condition.
Key West: Year-Round Tropical Conditions
Key West is the most demanding end of the Keys for UV and salt. Charter boats operating out of Key West Bight and Garrison Bight see the most sustained exposure of any market we service. For year-round charter operators, the MPF investment pays back fastest here because hull damage and gelcoat fade are constant without it.
