Most marine ceramic coatings perform well for a full boating season or more before a refresh is worth considering. That range shifts significantly based on a few real-world factors.
What Shortens the Lifespan
- Wet slip storage vs. a lift or dry storage — constant water and salt contact wears a coating faster than a boat that's out of the water between uses
- Higher UV climates — boats in Miami or the Florida Keys will see coating degrade faster than the same coating in Charleston
- Frequent high-speed running, which increases water and spray contact across the hull
- Harsh or improper wash products, which can strip hydrophobic properties over time
What Extends It
- Covered or lift storage between uses
- Regular rinsing after saltwater use
- Using pH-neutral soap, not dish soap or harsh degreasers
- Avoiding automated brush washes, which are hard on any coated surface
How to Tell It's Time for a Refresh
The clearest sign is water no longer beading tightly on the surface — sheeting instead of beading means the hydrophobic layer has broken down, even if the boat still looks glossy. A yearly inspection catches this before it turns into visible dulling or staining.
